Gravitational Waves from Cosmic Strings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gravitational waves from cosmic strings are generated in the first fractions of a second after the Big Bang, potentially providing a unprecedented probe of the early universe. We discuss the key dynamical processes underlying calculations of the stochastic background produced by a string network and we detail the parameter dependencies of the resulting spectral density Ωgr(f). The present constraints on the cosmic string mass scale µ arising from the millisecond pulsar timings and primordial nucleosynthesis are discussed, justifying our present conservative bound Gµ/c 2 < 5.4(±1.1) × 10 −6. We then discuss the strong prospect of detecting (or ruling out) cosmic string background with the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. Comparison is also made with alternative cosmological sources of gravitational waves such as inflation and hybrid topological defects.

Constraints on Cosmic Strings from the LIGO-Virgo Gravitational Wave Detectors
Cosmic strings can give rise to a large variety of interesting astrophysical phenomena. Among them, powerful bursts of gravitational waves (GWs) produced by cusps are a promising observational signature. In this Letter we present a search for GWs from cosmic string cusps in data collected by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors between 2005 and 2010, with over 625 days of live time. ...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation by Cosmic Strings in a Junction
The formalism for computing the gravitational power radiation from excitations on cosmic strings forming a junction is presented and applied to the simple case of co-planar strings at a junction when the excitations are generated along one string leg. The effects of polarization of the excitations and of the back-reaction of the gravitational radiation on the small scale structure of the string...
متن کاملGravitational Waves and Light Cosmic Strings
Gravitational wave signatures from cosmic strings are analyzed numerically. Cosmic string networks form during phase transistions in the early universe and these networks of long cosmic strings break into loops that radiate energy in the form of gravitational waves until they decay. The gravitational waves come in the form of harmonic modes from individual string loops, a “confusion noise” from...
متن کاملThe collision and snapping of cosmic strings generating spherical impulsive gravitational waves
The Penrose method for constructing spherical impulsive gravitational waves is investigated in detail, including alternative spatial sections and an arbitrary cosmological constant. The resulting waves include those that are generated by a snapping cosmic string. The method is used to construct an explicit exact solution of Einstein’s equations describing the collision of two nonaligned cosmic ...

Non-vacuum exact gravitational waves invariant for a non Abelian two-dimensional Lie algebra generated by two Killing fields whose commutator is of light type, are described. The polarization of these waves, already known from previous works, is related to their natural sources consisting of cosmic strings and γ-ray bursts. Non vacuum exact gravitational waves admitting only one Killing field o...
